The Bean Path is a nonprofit in Jackson, Mississippi that was founded by Dr. Nashlie Sephus and is on a mission to bridge the digital divide for Mississippians of all ages. Recently, they began offering Senior Planet classes through the Licensing Program in order to provide free tech classes designed for the older adult learner.

We caught up with Program Manager Erica Archie to talk about what makes The Bean Path special and how their partnership with Senior Planet is helping to expand their impact!

Tell me about The Bean Path.

The Bean Path’s mission is to bridge the digital divide by sharing tech expertise, growing networks, and empowering communities. The Bean Path offers hands-on workshops, mentorship, and access to tools and resources that support tech education, entrepreneurship, and innovation. From students to small business owners, we serve a diverse community ready to thrive in a digital world. Our Makerspace at 451 N Gallatin Street is a creative hub featuring 3D printers, sewing machines, and Senior Planet classes! It’s designed to spark learning, collaboration, and opportunity.

Tell me about Jackson, Mississippi! What makes it unique?

Jackson, Mississippi is a city rich in culture, history, and heart. Known as the “City with Soul,” it’s a place where music, food, and community run deep. From the sounds of blues and gospel to the flavors of soulful Southern cuisine, Jackson has a rhythm and warmth all its own. It’s also a city of resilience and creativity and it’s my forever home! As with any city, it does have its challenges, but with a powerful civil rights legacy, vibrant Black culture, and a growing tech and innovation scene; Jackson is both a soulful and beautiful place to live.

How does being a Senior Planet Licensing Partner help grow your impact?

Being a Senior Planet Licensing Partner deeply expands our impact by allowing us to serve a group that is too often overlooked: our senior adults. Through this partnership, we’re able to offer digital literacy programs that empower seniors to stay connected, confident, and independent in today’s tech-driven world.  It’s more than just tech education—it’s restoring dignity, opening doors, and reminding our seniors that they are seen, valued, and still very much a vital part of our community’s future.

Any success stories from people who have taken Senior Planet classes through Bean Path?

One of the most touching themes is the joy and independence our participants have gained. Many have shared how they were able to renew their driver’s licenses online for the first time—something that once felt overwhelming. Others now email and video chat with family, which has brought them closer to loved ones near and far. There’s so much excitement around streaming shows, online shopping, and exploring new interests on YouTube—they’re truly embracing the digital world! Our participants often say how empowered they feel now that they can do things on their own. That sense of confidence and connection has been life-changing, and it’s an honor to witness their journeys.

What does “aging with attitude” mean to you?

To me, aging with attitude means embracing every season of life with confidence, grace, and boldness. It’s about celebrating who you are…your wisdom, your voice, your beauty, without apology. It means continuing to grow, learn, and evolve, no matter your age. It’s choosing joy, staying curious, and living with purpose. It’s knowing that your story still matters, your dreams still count, and your best days aren’t behind you—they’re right in front of you. Aging with attitude is powerful. It’s liberation. It’s living fully, and on your own terms.
